“sound in fundamentals”?

Shouldn’t it be “fundamentally sound” or they “have sound fundamentals”

I have a doubt in the usage of “those” in fundamentals. Even though other choices had glaring SC errors or (each other - used when we have 2 options)

D) The bulging economies around the world – Brazil, Russia, India, China – are all sound in fundamentals, although their economic dynamics are different from those of one another.

Is “those” really needed here? Even without the “those”, it is clear that we are comparing economic dynamics and not the countries themselves.

Thoughts AndrewN?

Hello, ravigupta2912. Yes, those of is problematic in the sentence at hand. (This is at least the third time I have been called in to comment on a questionable OA from Experts' Global. Do not get me wrong. From what I have seen, the majority of the content is helpful to those preparing for the test. But it is that other minority of questions that you have to be careful about, and many students cannot tell one type from another.) Why? Because the use of the possessive pronoun their ahead of economic dynamics already clarifies what is being compared: their economic dynamics are different from one another. You would need a those of if the comparison were framed somewhat differently, as in, the economic dynamics of one country are different from those of any other.

I hope that helps clarify the matter.

- Andrew

Thanks AndrewN - I missed the “their”
possessive aspect because the sentence came off naturally and hence the need of another pronoun wasn’t felt. Got it.

My understanding of these two close choices:

B) Each of the bulging economies around the world – Brazil, Russia, India, China – are all sound in fundamentals, although their economic dynamics are different from one another.

D) The bulging economies around the world – Brazil, Russia, India, China – are all sound in fundamentals, although their economic dynamics are different from those of one another.

"Those of" plays a critical role here; In B, what are we literally saying? that the economic dynamics are different from "one another". please note, economic dynamics cannot be equated to the country itself. and that's it.

D> just places that "those of" to eradicate this doubt. now. We're comparing eco. dynamics of one country to the dynamics of the other.
