Indonesian geologists have discovered evidence that indicates that the archipelago is formed from a volcanic sediment, and its land originally erupting as a result of major geological activity.
Not a very impressive question, IMHO. What one knows of verb tenses is that there should not be unnecessary shifts of tense while presenting reported speeches, not withstand that one can use different tense forms as per the logical demand of the context. However, this topic would fail that tenet. Non-natives might find it difficult to grasp the real intent of this topic.
A. that indicates that the archipelago is formed from a volcanic sediment and its land originally erupting --- 1. ‘That’ parallelism is missing; 2. What is the point in stating that the archipelago is formed in simple present, when it was formed at least thousands of years ago? What further confuses is that the simultaneous act of the eruption is described in a past tense.
B. that has indicated the archipelago formed from a volcanic sediment, its land originally erupting---In written communication, the standard practice is to present whatever is indicated in a separate subordinate clause started by the connector ‘that’. However, this choice is reluctantly acceptable as somewhat sensible..
C. indicating that the archipelago had formed from a volcanic sediment with its land originally erupted--- had formed is active voice while erupted is passive voice. Perhaps if it was used with a subordinate conjunction such while, or as, it would be more acceptable.
D. to indicate that the archipelago had formed from volcanic sediment and its land originally erupted --- had formed is past perfect and erupted is simple past. The distinction between the formation and eruption is not clear.
E. to indicate that the archipelago is formed from a volcanic sediment and that its land originally erupted—The reason for the use of the present tense for the formation and the past tense for the eruption is unclear.
