A
The question tests on SV agreement.

In Option A its is reffering back to the family .

Family is singular therefore its refferal should also be singular.
Every other option uses plural form except A.
Therefore A is correct!

C is also incorrect because it introduces a semicolon making the dependent part of the sentence independent which is not the case.

SajjadAhmad bro I think the question is wrong.

Option A - what's ITS referring to?
Option B - wrong
Option C - They doubted - whose They ?
Option D - fits the logic , thinks it D
Option E - Had to earn is wrong.

Provide the POE If you can :)

Official Explanation

The sentence is correct as written.

The underlined portion of the sentence contains the pronoun its, so check that it agrees with its referent and is unambiguous. The singular pronoun its refers to the singular noun family. There appears to be no error in the original sentence, so keep choice A. Because there are no errors in the original sentence, there are no obvious repeaters to look for, so evaluate the remaining answer choices individually, looking for reasons to eliminate each.

Choice B introduces a pronoun agreement error by using the plural pronoun their to refer to the singular noun family. It also incorrectly uses where to refer to something other than a place, so eliminate choice B.

Choice C introduces a pronoun agreement error by using the plural pronoun they to refer to the singular noun family, so eliminate choice C.

Choice D introduces a pronoun agreement error by using the plural pronoun them to refer to the singular noun family, so eliminate choice D.

Choice E replaces the past tense verb earned with the verbal phrase had to earn which creates a parallel construction error with the verb enjoyed, so eliminate choice E.

The correct answer is choice A.

just focus on the how the family is addressed. as family is collective noun, the pronoun must be singular. the original question rightly maintains the case of the collective noun 'family'

Financially unsupported by his doubting family, the young artist ultimately earned its approval and enjoyed some success when he pursued work modeling for fellow artists and photographers, and photos of him graced the pages of a periodical his father read regularly.

a) Financially unsupported by his doubting family, the young artist ultimately earned its approval and enjoyed some success when he pursued work modeling for fellow artists and photographers, and photos of him graced the pages of a periodical his father read regularly.

b) Financially unsupported by his doubting family, the young artist ultimately earned their approval and enjoyed some success when he pursued work modeling for fellow artists and photographers, where photos of him graced the pages of a periodical his father read regularly.

c) With no familial financial support because they doubted him, the young artist ultimately earned the approval of his family and enjoyed some success when he pursued work modeling for fellow artists and photographers; work that graced the pages of a periodical his father read regularly.

d) With no financial support from his doubting family, the young artist ultimately earned the approval of them and enjoyed some success when he pursued work modeling for fellow artists and photographers; work that graced the pages of a periodical his father read regularly.

e) With no financial support from his doubting family members, the young artist had to earn their approval and enjoyed some success when he pursued work modeling for fellow artists and photographers and his photos graced the pages of a periodical his father read regularly.

Family is singular so ‘their’ or ‘them’ usage is incorrect. B, C and D out.
E changes the meaning in the part ‘ the young artist had to earn their approval’
This just tells us that earning the approval was a criterion and the sentence doesn’t make it clear if he fulfilled that criterion.
The correct meaning is that despite his family being unsupportive, he managed to get their support which is clear in A.

Hope it helps :)
