Keniston suggests that many of the agencies ostensibly ministering to the family have only succeeded in undermining the role of parents.

A) have only succeeded in undermining - Do not really see a problem with this, tenses are aligned

B) have succeeded only in the undermining of - We do not need that "of" there, it distorts meaning

C) have undermined, with some success, - This is subtle and changes the intended meaning -> it gives more credibility to agencies which is not the intended meaning -> agencies have ONLY succeeded

D) are, with some success, only undermining -> two present continuous in same sentence won't look that great

E) are only successful in that they undermine - > tense error

IMO A.

It correctly conveys the meaning of the sentence. It correctly shows contradiction.

Other options kind off distorts the meaning of the sentence.

Keniston suggests that many of the agencies ostensibly ministering to the family have only succeeded in undermining the role of parents.

A) have only succeeded in undermining

- no error identified; Subjunctive verb "suggest" used so subjunctive verb rule applicable. Verb is plural form/base form.

- Correct.

B) have succeeded only in the undermining of

- too wordy

- Incorrect

C) have undermined, with some success,

- distort the meaning.

- Incorrect.

D) are, with some success, only undermining

- Subjunctive verb error; verb should be in base form.

- Incorrect

E) are only successful in that they undermine

- Subjunctive verb error; verb should be in base form.

- Incorrect

IMO(A)

Project SC Butler: Sentence Correction (SC2)

For SC butler Questions Click Here

Keniston suggests that many of the agencies ostensibly ministering to the family have only succeeded in undermining the role of parents.

A) have only succeeded in undermining

B) have succeeded only in the undermining of

C) have undermined, with some success,

D) are, with some success, only undermining

E) are only successful in that they undermine

IMO - A is the correct answer.

A) have only succeeded in undermining
--> Do not find any error. Keep this option and continue to check other options.

B) have succeeded only in the undermining of
--> "in the undermining of" is wordy. Eliminate B.

C) have undermined, with some success,
--> "with some success" change the meaning of the original sentence. We do not know if they have any success or not. Eliminate C.

D) are, with some success, only undermining
--> "with some success" is same error as C. Besides, "only undermining" also change the meaning of original sentence. Eliminate D.

E) are only successful in that they undermine
--> "in that they undermine" is wordy and "that" is incorrect modifier. Eliminate E.

A is the only answer remaining, therefore it is my choice.
