OFFICIAL EXPLANATIONProject SC Butler: Sentence Correction (SC2)
THE PROMPTQuote:
The highest among Maslow's hierarchy of needs, self-actualization is characterized by
peak experiences, feelings of ecstasy, wonder, and awe, acceptance of the self, regardless of educational background, financial status, or skin color, and independence, not bothering to conform to other’s ideas of happiness or contentment.
• when sentences contain lists within lists, as is the case here, use a semicolon, not a comma, to separate each category of list.
→ According to the sentence, self-actualization is characterized by peak experiences, acceptance of self, and independence.
These three items and their sub-lists should be separated by semi colons.
→ In this next example sentence, "he" buys different things from three places. Those three places—the patisserie, the farmer's marker, and a local importer— anchor the list.
He likes to buy bread, croissants, and pain chocolat from the patisserie; fruit, cheese, and wine from the farmer's market; and wine from a local importer.→ Main items in this list/(sublists)
Self-actualization consists of
(1) peak experiences
[including] feelings of ecstasy, wonder, and awe
(2) acceptance of the self
regardless of educational background, financial status, or skin color
and
(3) independence
[that is,] not bothering to conform to other’s ideas of happiness or contentment.
THE OPTIONSQuote:
A) peak experiences, feelings of ecstasy, wonder, and awe, acceptance of the self, regardless of educational background, financial status, or skin color, and independence, not bothering
• the use of commas to separate the items in the sublists as well as the main items results in an incoherent sentence
We cannot easily find the large umbrella items in the list.
This sentence is one long list of hodgepodge noun phrases.
ELIMINATE A
Quote:
B) peak experiences
; feelings of ecstasy, wonder, and awe
; acceptance of the self, regardless of educational background, financial status, or skin color
, and independence, not bothering
• confusion about whether peak experiences and feelings of ecstasy should be "combined" somehow is not enough to strike this option
• unevenness in the list
is a reason to strike this option
→
peak experiences gets a semicolon
→
feelings of .... gets a semicolon
→
acceptance of the self gets a semicolon
→ but
independence, the last big ticket item on the list, improperly takes a comma and should be preceded by a semicolon
These semicolons are mini-stop signs.
They tell us where one part has ended and another has begun.
In this option, we do not know whether "independence" is part of acceptance of self, for example.
Three semicolons should be placed at the end of a list items and its accouterments.
Here there are only two.
ELIMINATE B
Quote:
C) peak experiences, feelings of ecstasy, wonder, and awe; acceptance of the self, regardless of educational background, financial status, or skin color; and independence, not bothering
Quote:
D) peak experiences
– feelings of ecstasy, wonder, and awe
– acceptance of the self
, regardless of educational background, financial status, or skin color
; and independence, not bothering
• inconsistent style: the main items are set off by em dashes, a comma, and a semicolon.he placement of semi colons is incorrect as they do not correctly separate the three items in the main list, resulting in an incoherent sentence.
ELIMINATE D
Quote:
E) peak experiences, feelings of ecstasy, wonder, and awe; acceptance of the self, regardless of educational background, financial status,
or skin color, and independence
; not bothering
• the placement of semi colons is incorrect
→ the semicolons do not correctly separate the three items in the main list, resulting in a sentence that is hard to follow and whose divisions are unclear
→ now it looks as though "financial status" or "skin color" are part of acceptance of the self.
• Big hint -- if you cannot clearly tell, from the options, which items are "big ticket" and which items are "tagalongs," then the author has not done you any favors and a better answer is almost certainly still out there.
ELIMINATE E
The correct answer is C.
COMMENTSminalgambhir , you asked whether this were a GMAT question.
I assume that you meant to ask whether this were an official GMAT question.
No.
(OG 2022 contained no new questions.)
GMAC occasionally tests this issue (and throws in fun extras such as "as well as" as part of the list.)
GMAC will avoid testing you on a lot of punctuation, though not all, because meaning is created by certain kinds of punctuation.
GMAC does test semicolons, colons, and Oxford commas.*
How might punctuation affect meaning? ← ← ← This is the crux of what GMAC tests.
