OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The primary suspect, like the secondary suspect did, argued that he did not know the victim.

(A) The primary suspect, like the secondary suspect did, argued that he did

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The like section should not include a conjugated verb. In this answer choice, however, the like section includes a conjugated verb (like the secondary suspect did).

What helps us identify this question as a Comparative question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign: Like, unlike, than, as

(B) The primary suspect, like the secondary suspect, argued that he does

Although this answer choice corrects the original Comparative error by eliminating the verb did because we have the comparative word like, it is grammatically incorrect. In Reported Speech, when the reporting verb is in the Past tense (argued), the following conjugated verbs should also be in the Past. However, does is in the Present.

What helps us identify this question as a Reported Speech question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign: Reported Speech with a reporting verb in Past tense

(C) Like the secondary suspect, the primary suspect argued that he did

The like section should not include a conjugated verb. In this answer choice, however, the verb did has been removed.
