My answer is (D). It took me 29 seconds.
The subject "the group" is singular, so the verb should be "was" rather than "were". Eliminate (ABC).
Compare (D) with (E). (D) makes sense as the group was exhilarated by the return (of the native son).
(E) indicates that the group was returning the native son (back to some unknown places), a nonsensical idea that helps eliminate (E).
