Eliminate the choices whose subjects and verbs disagree: A, whose subject is “use” and whose verb is “were,” and E, whose subject is “buttresses” and whose verb is “was” (be careful not to dismiss D for the verb “were”: the subject is changed). C is incorrect for its unnecessary use of the past perfect tense. The choice between B and D is a matter of concision; since the latter includes the ideas of buttresses and of their being used, you can deem it more efficient than B, which takes more words to say the same thing.
