The southeast Asian country of Indonesia, which has always been a top favored tourist destination, was seriously affected by the earthquake and a deadly tsunami created by Indian Ocean earthquake. This Tsunami disaster caused severe damage to life and property. Soon after tsunami the percentage of tourists visiting Indonesia declined by over 27%. Most of the tourist resorts in the Indonesian islands rely on foreign tourists for business. Therefore decline in percentage of tourists will lead to decline in average occupancy rates of the tourist resorts.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument given?
A. As the South East Asian currencies devalue against the dollar, more tourists are visiting South East Asia than ever before.
B. The Singapore airport, located less than 500 miles away from Indonesia, is expected to be 5 time more busier this year than it was expected 5 years back.
C. Half the resorts in Indonesia have been damaged by the Tsunami completely and are not open for business any more.
D. After Tsunami, the number of tourists who opted to visit some other South East Asian country as compared to Indonesia was higher.
E. Fewer people from Indonesia are travelling to other countries as this year than did last year.

C: It indicates that the number of eligible rooms have reduced as well . Therefore, even if number of tourists are reduced there is a chance that occupancy rate may be high.

C shows that the relationship is reversed. A good way to weaken a causal relationship. So C is the best.

C. Half the resorts in Indonesia have been damaged by the Tsunami completely and are not open for business any more.
Example:
Before tsunami: Number of room: 200, number of visiter: 100 --> occupancy rates = 100/200 = 50%
After tsunami: Number of room: 100 (=200*50%), number of visiter: 73 --> occupancy rates = 73/100 = 70%

Correct Answer : C

Argument : Therefore decline in percentage of tourists will lead to decline in average occupancy rates of the tourist resorts.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument given?

C. Half the resorts in Indonesia have been damaged by the Tsunami completely and are not open for business any more - half of resort rooms available, that means less rooms available compared to earlier,thus % of room occupancy will be high
