The question is precise. What does Mary infer from "Ann's Statement"?

From a careful observation of Ann's statement, you'd realize that Ann never made any claim about about what 'yardstick intelligence is measured by' and Mary did not get the whole "first position" thing from Ann, it was just Mary's own personal comment.

One of the best ways to understand this is to imagine the two women sitting and watching Mary's son play smartly among friends and then Ann says, "your son is very intelligent", and then Mary replies, 
"Yes, he always gets the first position in his class". 
This can be said to confirm Ann's statement with a fact, it doesn't mean Ann's statement meant that.

This is a tricky one but the correct answer is A.

Should be C, IMHO.

If we choose A, the assumption (by the author) is that "studies" are the only criteria for obtaining a (first) position in class. This is not stated anywhere and has been ASSUMED by the author.

E.g. for getting the first position, mabe student need to be good in both studies and sports? How do we know?

Here is an explanation I found online; Explanation:

B is clearly wrong. Hence we reject it.
There is no comparison being drawn between the child and others in his class. Neither does Ann seem to mean that nor does Mary seem to interpret that. Hence we reject D.
Ann does not make any comment on intelligence. She is discussing Mary's son. And Mary also only talks about her son. Hence we can not say that Mary thinks either of B and E. Mary instead thinks that Ann is trying to say that her son is good in studies. She thinks Ann means that her son is intelligent and thus good in studies. Hence we can say that A is the best answer option.
