All the evidence so far gathered fits both Dr. Grippen's theory and Professor Heissmann's. However, the prediction that these theories make about the result of the planned experiment cannot both be true. Therefore, the result of this experiment will confirm one of these theories at the expense of the other.
The argument above exhibits an erroneous pattern of reasoning most similar to that exhibited by which one of the following?
(A) David and Jane both think they know how to distinguish beech trees from elms, but when they look at trees together they often disagree. Therefore, at least one of the must have an erroneous method

This is my opinion.
In my opinion, E is the answer.
The error in reasoning as regards the question stem is that the planned experiment will prove one theory and disprove the other. What if they disprove both?
Let us see where this error now occurs:-
A. The issue here is just the opposite. At least one must have an erroneous method, which means both can have erroneous methods.
B. The description might be consistent with David’s view- thus, both may be proven right, if David’s description is sound.
C. There is no question of disproving both, since Jane is unsure and therefore uncommittal.
D. Examination of forest will prove exactly one of them right and exactly one of them wrong.
E. Maria may give an opinion that the tree is neither elm or beech. So, this may prove both wrong. Correct.
In my opinion, E is the answer.

This one confuses me quite a bit and even after seeing the OA I am not able to comprehend why the respective answer choice is correct.
