Spokesperson: Contrary to what some have claimed, our group's "Clean City" campaign has been a rousing success. After all, the amount of trash on the city's streets today is significantly lower than when the campaign began.

Which one of the following is an assumption required by the spokesperson's argument?

(A) The amount of trash on the city's streets was not declining at the same rate or faster before the campaign began that it did during the campaign.

(B) Those who claim that the campaign has not been a rousing success are unaware of the degree of the decline in the amount of trash since the campaign began.

(C) The campaign has been more successful in reducing the amount of trash on the city's streets than has any other campaign in the past.

(D) The spokesperson's group did not receive any special funding to support the planning or execution of the campaign.

(E) The amount of trash on the city's streets has declined steadily throughout the course of the campaign.

I think its "A".

But i have doubt regarding option "e". Anyone please explain what is steadily decline and how it make option "E" wrong if "A" is the correct answer.

E is irrelevant and has no impact on the argument. Suppose the amount of trash on the streets DID NOT decline steadily, the conclusion can still hold.

so the rate must bust be lower, can be an assumption

support argument

but it cant help to explain how rate of trash lower after campaign begun

Shwetac8, See if this helps -

Option B - There is simply no hint about this. We don't know why those other people are claiming that the campaign was not a success. Perhaps, they just hate the spokesperson's group or they have found a different stat to prove so. We have absolutely no idea about it.

Option A - Well, if the amount of trash was already declining at the same or at a faster rate, then the campaign didn't really do much, did it? Obviously if the trash is already at a decline, I'd expect less amount of trash at a future date. Therefore, option A is an assumption and without this assumption, the conclusion falls apart.

Happy to discuss any of the options further! :)
