We have to determine whether the average of the grades Carla achieved in the five courses was higher than the average of the grades Joel achieved in those courses.
Option D tell us that Carla's lowest grade and Joel's highest grade were the same. It's also given that both of them have achieved same score only in History. Therefore it implies that Carla scored lowest grade in History while Joel scored highest in History. As they had no other common score, Carla had higher score than Joel in the other 4 subjects. Therefore average of Carla was higher than Joel's.

I don't understand. If C has higher grade than J in three courses and one has similar grade, how would her avg being more than J wont be possible. Even if she scores lower in the other remaining course, she will still have an avg greater than J.
