Beauty contests are not unfair because although they mostly judge contestants on their physical appearance, they do judge contestants on various other qualities as well.

the words 'mostly on physical appearance and not as much on other qualities' implies that beauty contest do judge contestants on other qualities as well. Then why is D wrong?

Although critics of various beauty contests argue that such contests objectify women by judging them mostly on their physical appearance and not as much on other qualities they may possess, such contests are little different from any other competition; for instance, in various sports contests participants are judged mostly on their physical prowess than anything else. Therefore, in beauty competitions contestants can be judged on their physical beauty without implying that beauty is all that matters about anyone.

Which of the following can be concluded from the argument given above?

A. Competitions by nature lay stress on honing one particular quality of contestants.

B. While evaluating the contestants, every competition values certain criteria more than the other criteria.

C. Both beauty contests and sports competitions are unfair because they value very limited qualities in contestants.

D. Beauty contests are not unfair because although they mostly judge contestants on their physical appearance, they do judge contestants on various other qualities as well.

E. Beauty contests are similar to sports competitions in that both judge contestants on their physical prowess.

Is it not A because the option is too extreme or honing is the incorrect word?

Ok, so this argument is saying that some people don't like beauty contests because they think they only judge women based on how they look, but that's not really any different from how sports contests judge participants mostly based on their physical abilities. So, it's like saying it's ok to judge people on one thing as long as it's clear that there are other things that matter too.

The conclusion from this argument is that in any competition, some criteria are always going to be more important than others, and that's just the way it is. So, option B is the right answer because it says that every competition has certain things it values more than others.

We can't ever conclude what is fair or unfair unless we have clear criteria for what makes something fair. In general, watch out for answers that try to derive opinions (fair, should, better, best, etc.) from factual information.

"Honing" isn't right, because that would mean the competitions are actually improving or refining some quality, rather than just judging them. This would mean that participating in beauty competitions makes you more beautiful. While this might be true for some competitions (maybe participating in sports competitions improves your ability), the text doesn't tell us anything about this aspect of competitions, so the answer can't be concluded based on the text.
