I will choose Option E
E)
Assessment of herbal medication with the help of modern Western science.

This perfectly captures the author's view: herbal medicine is valuable, but it should be evaluated and understood through the lens of modern science, not followed blindly.

Option C is also a good contender but the passage is not about the historical contribution of herbal medicine to science.

The tone is key here.
  • Author says herbal medicine is gaining popularity “for the right reasons”
  • But also says it’s foolish to blindly follow ancient treatments
  • Mentions that modern science now understands much more, implies we should use that knowledge

A) a ban on ancient techniques of herbal medication
>too extreme

B) a mix of both modern medicine and ancient herbal medication
>passage doesn’t explicitly support combining

C) critical assessment of how ancient herbal medication contributed to the advancement of medical science
>Focuses on past contribution

D) increased reliance on western medical science in the West
>ignores appreciation of herbal

E) assessment of ancient herbal medication with the help of modern western medical science
> exactly matches tone

Ans E

ExpertsGlobal5
The ancient techniques of herbal medication, most of which are from eastern countries, are gaining popularity in the West for the right reasons. Western medical science has seen tremendous progress in the last several decades and has now even begun to understand how the human brain works. Under these circumstances, it is foolish to blindly follow ancient herbal treatments as if there is little we can do but to follow them as they are.

It can be inferred from the passage above that the author would be most likely to favor

A) a ban on ancient techniques of herbal medication
B) a mix of both modern medicine and ancient herbal medication
C) critical assessment of how ancient herbal medication contributed to the advancement of medical science
D) increased reliance on western medical science in the West
E) assessment of ancient herbal medication with the help of modern western medical science

Option E IMO looks like the only relevant option according to the stem.
