If a number between 1/3 and 1 is selected at random, which of the following will the number most likely be between?

A) 7/20 and 3/4
B) 11/20 and 9/10
C) 7/10 and 3/4
D) 3/4 and 4/5
E) 13/20 and 1

The number will most likely be between the largest range.

A. 7/20 and 3/4 --> range 8/20;
B. 11/20 and 9/10 --> range 7/20;
C. 7/10 and 3/4 --> range 1/20;
D. 3/4 and 4/5 --> range 1/20;
E. 13/20 and 1 --> range 7/20.

Answer: A.

if-a-number-between-1-and-1-2-is-selected-at-random-which-of-101786.html

Dear Bunuel,

Is range matters only?

What about the range away from 1/3 to 1 ie if answer choices contain 3/4 and 6?

I guess difference from lower value to lower limit ( ie 3/4 -1/3) and higher to upper limit ( 6-1) matters. If addition of the difference is less for answer choice then probability of falling that number in the range will be more.

Correct if i;m wrong...

Not sure I can follow you... We are told that a number is between 1/3 and 1 and each answer choices gives range within it...

Could we also do this by looking at which number is closer to 1/3?

Because, the end of the ranges are all close to 1 (0.75 - 0.9).

So, we can look at which one of the fractions is closest to 1/3, which is about 0.3.
And 7/20 is also close to 0.3, so we can say that the number we are looking for will be between 7/20 and 3/4.

At least, this is what I did.. Is there a trap I missed here?

find ranges amongst all the given options

the common dr here for all options ; 40
so starting with option A
14 - 30 = 16
22-36= 14
28-30=2
30-32=2
26-40=14

option A has the highest range ; 16
IMO A

Convert everything to LCD

7/20 and 15/20 <--- Largest difference among the choices
11/20 and 18/20
14/20 and 15/20
15/20 and 16/20
13/20 and 20/20
