We can do it in 2 ways.

Say drained = d liters
Still holds = 12 - d

However, 12 - d = d - 6
d = 9

Or we can do it the other way round.

Say it holds = h

Drained = 12 - h

h = 12 - h - 6
h = 3
=> Drained = 12 - h = 9
