Hi All,

While the Algebra involved in this question is relatively low-level, some Test Takers get tripped up by the wording in the prompt. Since the 'action' described in the question is easy enough to understand ('draining water') and the answers are numbers, we can TEST THE ANSWERS until we find a solution that fits the description in the prompt....

We're told that a sink holds 12 liters of water. Water is drained until the sink holds EXACTLY 6 liters LESS than the quantity DRAINED AWAY. We're asked for the number of liters that were drained away.

Let's TEST THE ANSWERS....

Answer B: 3

IF...3 liters were drained away, then there would be 9 liters in the sink. Here, the water held is 6 liters MORE than the quantity drained away. Since we need it to be 6 liters LESS, the numbers clearly need to be 'reversed'... Let's just to Answer E.....

Answer E: 9

IF....9 liters were drained away, then there would be 3 liters in the sink. Here, the water held is 6 liters LESS than the quantity drained away. This is a MATCH for what we were told, so this MUST be the answer.

Final Answer:
GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

Let the water drained is =X; so water in sink=X-6;
and X+(X-6)=12 therefore X=9

Hence answer is E

Thanks,

We can do it in 2 ways.

Say drained = d liters
Still holds = 12 - d

However, 12 - d = d - 6
d = 9

Or we can do it the other way round.

Say it holds = h

Drained = 12 - h

h = 12 - h - 6
h = 3
=> Drained = 12 - h = 9

Kudos for a correct solution.

KAPLAN OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

The key to solving this one is to focus on the quantity of water drained away, which we will call x. We're told that x liters of water are drained away, and x - 6 liters are left. So x (liters taken away) plus x - 6 (liters left) equals 12 (total liters in the sink). Therefore 2x - 6 = 12, and x = 9.

Let the amount of water drained away be y
Amount of water left =y-6
total =12
y+y-6=12
y=9
