if any amount is distributed among A ,B and C so that the part of A is doubled that of the part of B and part of b is 4 time the part of C .Find the ratio among their parts.

A. 1:2:4

B. 1:4:1

C. 8:4:1

D. 2:4:1

E. 4:3:2

A=2B, B=4C
A:B:C = 2B:B:B/4=8:4:1

=> Ans: C

Forget conventional ways of solving math questions. In PS, IVY approach is the easiest and quickest way to find the answer.

if any amount is distributed among A ,B and C so that the part of A is doubled that of the part of B and part of b is 4 time the part of C .Find the ratio among their parts.

A. 1:2:4

B. 1:4:1

C. 8:4:1

D. 2:4:1

E. 4:3:2

By the assumptions as mentioned we have A=2B and B=4C. So A=2(4C) and we get A=8C. We have, therefore, A:B:C = 8C:4C:C. By cancelling the ratio with C we have 8:4:1. The answer is, therefore, C.

let the part for A,B,C be a,b,c respectively
a = 2b or a : b = 2:1 = 8:4
b = 4c or b:c = 4:1

therefore a:b:c = 8:4:1

Confused. Help!

Given:
A = 2B
B = 4C

In order to make 'B' equal in both the ratios, we need to multiple the second ration by 2. Therefore,
B=4C becomes, 2B = 8C.

(1) ----- A = 2B
(2) -----2B = 8C

Combining (1) and (2), we get A:2B:8C.

Evidently, there is no such answer. What am I missing?

Hi Blackbox,

While you've done the proper algebra, you have not properly translated the given equations into the end ratio.

Here's a simple example of how the math actually "works":

A = 2B

This means that A is equal to TWICE B.

For example....
IF... B=1, then A=2
IF... B=2, then A=4
IF... B=3, then A=6
Etc.

This means that whatever B is, A is DOUBLE that value. Thus, the ratio of A to B is...
A:B
2:1

Using that example, and the equations that you've created, what would the ratio of A:B:C equal?

Let \(B = x\).

I see what are you're trying to convey. So, A:B = 2:1, B:C = 4:1. In order to make an equal proportion of the items, I need to make B = 4 in the first ratio. Therefore, I'd have to multiply the first ratio by 4. Which makes the combined ratio 8:4:1.

Thanks mate.

In such questions,
take the last (smallest fraction, i.e. 'c' in this example) as 1 and solve.

Here,
c=1c
b=4c
a=(4c)*2=8c

Hence, 8:4:1
