Forget conventional ways of solving math questions. In PS, IVY approach is the easiest and quickest way to find the answer.

The ratio of two quantities is 2 : 3. If each of the quantities is increased by 6, what is the ratio of the new quantities?

A. 2 : 3
B. 6 : 7
C. 8 : 9
D. 8 : 3
E. It cannot be determined from the information given.

Since the ratio is 2:3 we can put the quantities as 2K and 3K.
Moreover increasing quantities implies that the quantities become 2K+6 and 3K+6. So the ratio is (2K+6):(3K+6). The ratio value depend on the value of K. So It cannot be determined from the information given.

The answer is, therefore, (E).

2/3 means 4/6, 6/9, 8/12 etc. Addition of even certain numbers gives the different final ratio

A. 2 : 3
B. 6 : 7
C. 8 : 9
D. 8 : 3
E. It cannot be determined from the information given.

If the original two quantities are 2 and 3 (which has a ratio of 2: 3), then the new ratio will be 8 : 9. However, if the original two quantities are 4 and 6 (which also has a ratio of 2: 3), then the new ratio will be 10 : 12 or 5: 6.

We see that the new ratio can’t be uniquely determined; thus, the answer to this question must be E.

Answer: E
