I can't formulate the pithy one-sentence explanation here (never fear, someone will be along shortly to do so after I bump up the question), but the correct answer is 9/20.
Use 1 to test.
\(\frac{1}{\frac{3}{8}}\) * \(\frac{5}{6}\) =
1 * \(\frac{8}{3}\) * \(\frac{5}{6}\) = \(\frac{40}{18}\), or \(\frac{20}{9}\)
So what must 1 be divided by to yield the same number, \(\frac{20}{9}\)?
Short answer: the reciprocal of the latter, \(\frac{9}{20}\). Or
\(\frac{1}{x}\) = \(\frac{20}{9}\)
Either flip or cross multiply:
9 = 20x
x =\(\frac{9}{20}\)
1 divided by \(\frac{3}{8}\) and multiplied by \(\frac{5}{6}\) (= 20/9) is the same as 1 divided by \(\frac{9}{20}\) (=20/9)
