D is correct. So, we got that if we divide x by 3/8 and multiply by 5/6, we'll get \(\frac{20}{9}*x\). The question asks: by what number we should divide x to get \(\frac{29}{9}*x\)? The answer is \(\frac{9}{20}\):

\(\frac{x}{(\frac{9}{20})} = \frac{20}{9}*x\).

Answer: D.

Solution

Given
• Two operations on an unknown number
To find
• A division operation equivalent to the two given operations.

Approach and Working out
Let the number be x.

• Two operations
    o Dividing x by 3/8 will give x/(3/8) = 8x/3
    o And then multiplying by 5/6 will give (8x/3) * (5/6) = 20x/9
• Single equivalent operation
o Suppose the number by which we need to divide x is y.
    o Then, x/y = 20x/9
    o Thus, y = 9/20

Correct Answer: Option D
