Tickets for all but 100 seats in a 10,000-seat stadium were sold. Of the tickets sold, 20% were sold at half price and the remaining tickets were sold at the full price of $2. What was the total revenue from ticket sales?

A. $15,840
B. $17,820
C. $18,000
D. $19,800
E. $21,780

The question was locked, so this is a re-post.

What is the quickest way to solve this? I guess rounding is one method. Are there any other methods?

The fastest way to solve it, is to ignore at first the fact that 100 were not sold.

so 20% of 10,000 = 2000

remaining 8000 sold for 2 dollar = 16000

16,000+2000 = 18,000
(now since -100 tickets)

from answer options one can see that the clossest number should be just a bit smaller than 18000

Hence B :)

0.2 x 9,900 = 1,980 tickets were sold for 1 dollar each, so these tickets generated 1,980 dollars in revenue.

9,900 - 1,980 = 7,920 were sold for 2 dollars each, so these tickets generated 15,840 dollars in revenue.

The total revenue earned was 1,980 + 15,840= 17,820 dollars.

Answer: B

Tickets for all but a 100 seats were sold means,

total seats - 100 seats were sold, i.e. 10,000 - 100 seats were sold (9900 were sold and 100 remains unsold)

Think of it this way - tickets for ALL except a 100 seats were sold, so 100 seats remain unsold.
