In a workshop there are 4 kinds of beds, 3 kinds of closets, 2 kinds of shelves and 7 kinds of chairs. In how many ways can a person decorate his room if he wants to buy in the workshop one shelf, one bed and one of the following: a chair or a closet?

A. 168.
B. 80.
C. 56.
D. 48.
E. 16.

Two possible arrangements
1) one shelf, one bed and one chair= 4*2*7
2) one shelf, one bed and one closet= 4*2* 3

Total ways= 4*2*7 + 4*2* 3
8(7+3)= 80

B is the answer

AND means multiply combinations, OR means add them.

One shelf AND one bed AND (one closet OR one chair) = 2*4*(3+7) = 80 (B)

Number of ways to select 1 bed = 4
Number of ways to select 1 closet = 3
Number of ways to select 1 shelf = 2
Number of ways to select 1 chair = 7

Number of ways to select 1 closet OR 1 chair = 3+7 = 10

So total number of ways to select 1 bed AND 1 shelf AND (1 closet OR 1 chair)
= (number of ways to select 1 bed)*(number of ways to select 1 shelf)*(number of ways to select 1 closet OR 1 chair)
=4*2*10 = 80
