Quantity = 7 pounds
Price = 3(1.11) + 4(0.9) = 6.93
Price per pound = 6.93/7 = 0.99

To make $0.21 profit the grocer must sell the cereal at 0.99 + 0.21 = $1.2

This one asks us to calculate the weighted average of two mixtures.

Three pounds of raisins at a cost of $1.11 per pound are mixed with 4 pounds of corn flakes at a cost of $0.90 per pound

weighted average of the mixture = \(\frac{3 * 1.11 + 4 * 0.90}{7}\) = \(\frac{6.93}{7}\) = cost of the mixture per pound

to generate a profit of $0.21 , the selling price of the mixture should be : cost of the mixture + profit

= \(\frac{6.93}{7}\) + 0.21 = \(\frac{8.40}{7}\) = $1.20 = D ( Answer)

Total cost of 7 pound of cereal = 3*1.11 + 4 * 0.90 = $ 6.93
Cost per pound of cereal = $ 6.93 /7 = $ 0.99(This is cost price)
To make a profit of $ 0.21, the price grocer should charge = $ 0.99 + $ 0.21 = $ 1.20
Hence, Ans - D

Three pounds of raisins and 4 pounds of corn flakes are used to make a large bag of breakfast cereal. Raisins cost $1.11 per pound and flakes cost $0.90 per pound. What must the grocer charge for a pound of the cereal to make a profit of $0.21 per pound?

A. $0.99
B. $1.00
C. $1.07
D. $1.20
E. $1.21

First we can determine the total cost to the grocer:

Cost for raisins = 3 x 1.11 = $3.33

Cost for corn flakes = 4 x 0.90 = $3.60

Total cost to grocer = $6.93

Cost per pound = 6.93/7 = $0.99

Since the grocer wants to make a profit of $0.21 per pound, he must charge:

0.99 + 0.21 = $1.20

Solution

Given:

    • Three pounds of raisins and 4 pounds of corn flakes are used to make a large bag of breakfast cereal
    • Raisins cost $1.11 per pound and flakes cost $0.90 per pound.

To find:

    • The selling price per pound of the cereal to make a profit of $0.21 per pound.

Approach and Working:

    • Cost Price of 3 pounds of raisins= 3*1.11= 3.33
    • Cost Price of 4 pounds of corn flakes = 4 * 0.90= 3.60

Hence, Cost price of 7-pound cereal meal= 3.33+3.60= 6.93.
    • Thus, selling price = 6.93+ 0.21*7
    • Selling price per pound= \(\frac{6.93}{7}+0.21\)= 0.99+0.21= 1.20

Hence, the correct answer is option D.

Deconstructing the Question

3 lb of raisins at $1.11 per lb
4 lb of flakes at $0.90 per lb

Total mixture = 7 lb

We first compute the cost per pound, then add the desired profit of $0.21 per pound.

Step-by-step

Cost of raisins:

\(3 \times 1.11 = 3.33\)

Cost of flakes:

\(4 \times 0.90 = 3.60\)

Total cost:

\(3.33 + 3.60 = 6.93\)

Cost per pound:

\(\frac{6.93}{7} = 0.99\)

Add profit:

\(0.99 + 0.21 = 1.20\)
