Let T = the sum of all of George's test scores.
George divided the sum of his test scores by 7 to get 96.
So we get: T/7 = 96
Multiply both sides by 7 to get: T = (96)(7)
To get the ACTUAL average, George SHOULD have divided the sum of his test scores by 8
So, ACTUAL average = T/8
= (96)(7)/8
= (12)(7)
= 84
