John spent $25, which is 15 percent of his monthly wage. What is his monthly wage?

(A) $80
(B) $166 2/3
(C) $225
(D) $312.5
(E) $375

\(\frac{25}{15}*100 = 166 \frac{2}{3}\)

Thus, answer will be (B) \(166 \frac{2}{3}\)

Let his monthly wage= X

\(\frac{15}{100}\)*X=25

X= \(\frac{25*100}{15}\)

X= 166\(\frac{2}{3}\)

Answer: B.

Kudos please if you like my explanation!

Let his monthly wage be x. Given that:
15% of x = 25, So x = 25/0.15 = 500/3 = $ 166 2/3

Hence answer is B

amanvermagmat , what made you choose 20 as the number by which to multiply the numerator and denominator of "x = 25 / .15" to get 500 / 3?

I realize that you were after "nicer," rounder numbers -- just can't see how or why you knew to pick 20.

If it's obvious, it won't be the first time the obvious was elusive.

Hi Genxer

I did not multiply numerator and denominator by 20. I just solved like this:

25/0.15 ... Removing decimal sign from denominator, we have to put 100 in the numerator. So:

25/0.15 = 25/15 * 100 = 5/3 * 100 = 500/3

But yes, if we multiply both by 20, we will get the same thing. Wonderful :)

(A) $80
(B) $166 2/3
(C) $225
(D) $312.5
(E) $375

If we let w = John’s monthly wage, we can create the following equation:

25 = 0.15w

25/0.15 = w

166 ⅔ = w

Answer: B
