A cabdriver’s income consists of his salary and tips. His salary is $50 a week. During one week his tips were 5/4 of his salary. What fraction of his income for the week came from tips?

(A) 4/9
(B) 1/2
(C) 5/9
(D) 5/8
(E) 5/4

We can let t = the value of the driver’s tips; thus:

t = (5/4) x 50 = 250/4 = 62.5

Thus, the fraction of his income that came from tips was 62.5/(50 + 62.5) = 62.5/112.5 = 625/1125 = 125/225 = 25/45 = 5/9.

Answer: C

I went with C. But I multiplied it all out and I see there's an easier way to do it and let his salary = 1.

Nice tip.

Avoid unnecessary decimals and complicated math.

Total income is \(50+\frac{5}{4}*50 = \frac{450}{4}\)

\(Tips = \frac{250}{4}\)

\(\frac{Part}{whole} = fraction\)

\(\frac{250}{4} * \frac{4}{450} = \frac{5}{9}\)
