I have one doubt... how you reached to this from the way it is written in the question??
am i missing some concept here???


33.33% = 100/3% = 100/3 * 1/100 = 1/3

Hi,

Percent is just that number divided by 100, so 33.333 % = 33.333/100 = 1/3.
It is very useful to remember the basic percent - fraction conversions as they appear quite often:
multiples of 1/4
1/4 = 25%
2/4 = 1/2 = 50%
3/4 = 75%

multiples of 1/3
1/3 = 33.33%
2/3 = 66.66% = 2/3

multiples of 1/10
1/10 = 10%
2/10 = 20%
.... all the way down to
9/10 = 90%
10/10 = 100%

Further on remembering multiples of 1/8 can also be useful.

\(\frac{1}{4}\) of 4800 is 1200
1200 is the # of student bus riders


From 1200 1/3 were transferred
\(\frac{1}{3}\) of 1200 is 400
400 is the # of transferred students


Now the total # of remaining students is 4800-400=4400
and the total # of remaining student bus riders is 1200-400=800


The question asks for the \(\frac{total # of remaining student bus riders}{total # of remaining students}\)

This equals to \(\frac{800}{4400}\) =\(\frac{8}{44}\) =\(\frac{2}{11}\)

Hence, the right question is C.

Twenty-five percent of the 4,800 students in an urban school district ride the bus to school. If \(33 \frac{1}{3}\) percent of the bus riders transfer to a different school district and no other changes occur, what portion of the students remaining at the first school district are bus riders?

(A) 1/12
(B) 2/7
(C) 2/11
(D) 1/6
(E) 2/5

We are given that 1/4 x 4,800 = 1200 students ride the bus to school. Since 33 ⅓ percent, or 1/3, of the bus riders transfer to a different school district, then 1/3 x 1200 = 400 students/bus riders transfer. Thus we have 1200 - 400 = 800 bus riders left and 4800 - 400 = 4400 students left in the school district. Therefore, the students who are bus riders account for 800/4400 = 8/44 = 2/11 of the total remaining students in the school district.

Answer: C
