In a recent study, 90 people were surveyed about what type of animal they owned as a pet. Everyone surveyed owned at least one animal. The results are shown in the Venn diagram. What percent of the respondents said they had a dog and a cat but no birds?

A. 15%
B. 17%
C. 30%
D. 46%
E. 90%

Dear Moderator,
Can we add " Approximate " in the question stem ," what percent of respondents Approximately....."
because actual percentage is coming to 16.66 %.
Thank you.

To solve the exercise, I started by applying the formula T = A + B + C − ( A∩B + A∩C + B∩C ) − 2 ⋅ ( A ∩ B ∩ C ). However, I later realised that the values in the Venn diagram were not overlapping. Is there a hint or general rule I should know to recognise this next time, or is it always handled this way?

General rule: in a Venn diagram, a number written inside a specific region represents the count for that exact region only (the exclusive part), unless the diagram explicitly says otherwise.

So in this diagram: 29 means dog only, 17 means cat only, 14 means bird only, 4 means dog and bird only, 9 means cat and bird only, 2 means all three. The missing dog and cat only region is the one you solve for.
