At Flo’s Pancake House, pancakes can be ordered with any of six possible toppings. If no toppings were repeated, how many different ways are there to order pancakes with three toppings?

A) 20

B) 40

C) 54

D) 120

E) 720

three toppigns: 6C3=20 option A

Hi ,

Can you please help me to understand the reasoning of your answer.

And why my approach is wrong.

No. of ways to select 3 toppings: 6*5*4* 3! (as order doesnt matter and they can be arranged in 6 different ways). This is giving 720 as the answer.

You need to divide by 3! because order does not matter.
When you select the first topping in 6 ways, second in 5 ways and third in 3 ways, you have ordered them. So you need to un-order them for which you need to divide by 3!.

6*5*4/3! = 20

Basically, you only need to select here, not arrange.

Hey Karishma,

Can you help me understand why order doesnt matter. QS says how may ways I can order Pan Cake. So for same toppings I can change their order to get a different Pan Cake.
