upon solving for eqn x^2 + 5x + 6/x + 2[/fraction] = 5[/m]
we get x= +2
x+5= 7 , D would be correct...

x+5= 7,3 im not sure which would be correct option... B or D?

Take the values for "x" and put them back into the original equation. Upon doing so you'll find that (-2+2) will equal 0; 0 in the denominator is not allowed on the GMAT as it is undefined. Therefore, the only value of "x" that is allowed is 2.

Answer choice D is correct.

\(\frac{x^2 + 5x + 6}{x + 2} = 5\)

i..e \(x^2 + 5x + 6=5x + 10\)

i.e. \(x^2 -4 = 0\)

i.e. \(x = +2 or -2\)

But x can NOT be -2 because in that case denominator x+2 will be come 0 making the expression undefined.

Hence, x = +2 is the only solution acceptable

i.e. x+5 = 2+5 = 7

Answer: Option D

Simplifying, we have:

(x + 2)(x + 3)/(x + 2) = 5

x + 3 = 5

x = 2, so x + 5 = 7

Answer: D
