(36/100-X)*100 = 72
3600=7200-72X
3600 = 72X
50 = X

50 blue balls need to be removed.

D is the correct answer

Deconstructing the Question

  • Initial state: 100 balls total. 36 Red (36%) and 64 Blue (64%).
  • Action: Remove only Blue balls.
  • Goal: Red balls (which stay at 36) must represent 72% of the new total.

Step 1: Calculate the New Total (T)
Since the number of Red balls is constant:
\(72\% * T = 36\)
\(0.72 * T = 36\)
\(T = 36 / 0.72\)
\(T = 3600 / 72 = \) 50

The new total number of balls in the urn must be 50.

Step 2: Calculate Balls Removed
\(Number to remove = Initial Total - New Total\)
\(Removed = 100 - 50 = \) 50

The correct answer is D.
