Which of the following is less than 1/6?

A. 0.1667

B. 3/18

C. 0.167

D. 0.1666

E. 8/47

Since 1/6 = 0.1666.... (with the digit 6 repeating forever), we see that 0.1666 is less than 1/6.

To determine which of the given options is less than 1/6, we can compare them numerically.

A. 0.1667 is equal to 1/6, as 0.1667 ≈ 1/6.

B. 3/18 can be simplified to 1/6, as both the numerator and the denominator can be divided by 3.

C. 0.167 is greater than 1/6, as 0.167 > 1/6.

D. 0.1666 is less than 1/6, as 0.1666 < 1/6.

E. 8/47 is greater than 1/6, as 8/47 > 1/6.

Therefore, the only option that is less than 1/6 is option D. 0.1666.

Which of the following is less than 1/6?
A. 0.1667
B. 3/18
C. 0.167
D. 0.1666
E. 8/47
Solution:

  • There are absolutely no calculations required in this question
  • It is always advised to memorize the decimal and percentage equivalent of fractions of 1/2, 1/3, 1/4....1/19
  • We know \(1/6=0.166666....\)

  • Option A: \(0.1667\) is greater than 0.1666.....
  • Option B: \(3/18=1/6\) is equal to 0.1666.....
  • Option C: \(0.167\) is greater than 0.1666.....
  • Option D: \(0.1666\) is less than 0.1666.....
  • Option E: \(8/47\) is greater than \(8/48\) or 0.1666.....

Hence the right answer is Option D

I used the calculator and find the option D is exactly equal to the given question. But can't able to find less than 1/6.
The 'shortcut' here is to find the smallest out of the 5 choices, the smallest one will automatically be the correct answer since there cannot be 2 correct answers. Let's look at the choices with fractions first, B) 3/18 which is equal to 1/6, and not less than 1/6, E) 8/47, since 8/48 = 1/6, 8/47 is more than 1/6. Now we are left with 3 choices with decimals, just pick the least of the 3 and that's the correct answer -

0.1667, 0.167, 0.1666.

0.167 is the highest since the other 2 choices have a 6 after 0.16.

Out of the remaining 2, the one ending in the smaller number will be the smallest since they have an equal number of decimal points.

Ans. 0.1666
