I would like some help on how to solve the following

Six small eggs weigh the same as five medium eggs. Six medium eggs weigh the same as four large eggs. How many small eggs would weigh the same as five large eggs?

A 5
B 6
C 8
D 9
E 12

I have eliminated A, B, and E but am stuck on how to finish. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Take small, medium and large as s, m and l...
So 6s=5m and 6m=4l...
Now we are looking for a relation between s and l.. so combine the two relations above by making coefficient of m equal..

Coefficient of m is 5 and 6 so multiply by 6 and 5 respectively
6s=5m....6*6s=6*5m....36s=30m
Similarly 6m=4l gives 30m=20l
Thus 36s=30m=20l....that is 36s=20l
Divide by 4 to get 9s=5l
So D is the ANSWER

Try to write the equation of what is given

Six small eggs weigh the same as five medium eggs
6s=5m
Six medium eggs weigh the same as four large eggs
6m=4l
How many small eggs would weigh the same as five large eggs? - We need a relationship between s and 5l
6s=5m
m=6s/5
Now 6m=4l
4l=6m=6(6s/5)
4l=36/5s
5l=36/4=9s

Hence D

s=5 l?
1m=6s/5
6*6s/5=4 L
L= s9/5
so 5 large
L = 9 small

Hey Sboyeff

Welcome to GMATClub!

If we were to write equations for the question, we will end up with 6S = 5M & 6M = 4L

In order to equate the three types of eggs, we will have to multiply the first equation
by 6 and the second equation by 5, making the equations 36S = 30M and 30M = 20L
For every 36S(small eggs) there are 20L(large eggs). Since we have been asked to find
out how many small eggs would be the same as 5 large eggs, we can divide by 4.

Therefore, 9(Option D) small eggs will weight the same as 5 large eggs.
