A drum contains 3 to 5 jars each of which contains 30 to 40 marbles. If 10 percent of the marbles are flawed, what is the greatest possible number of flawed marbles in the drum?

(A) 51
(B) 40
(C) 30
(D) 20
(E) 12

10 percent of the marbles are flawed so if we need to maximize the number of flawed marbles then we need to maximize the base of the percentage viz. Number of marbles

Maximum Number of Marbles = Maximum possible jars * Maximum marbles in each jar

Maximum Number of Marbles = 5*40 = 200

So maximum flawed marbles = 10% of 200 = 20

Answer: Option D

The greatest total number of marbles is 5 x 40 = 200, and if 10% of those 200 are flawed, then 20 would be flawed.

Answer: D
