Working at their individual rates, Marcus and Latrell can build a certain brick house in 7.5 and 5 hours, respectively. When they work together,they are paid $35 per hour. If they share their pay in proportion to the amount of work each does,then what is Marcus’ hourly pay for building the house?

In 15 hours, Marcus builds 2 houses and Latrell builds 3 houses. So they do work in a 2 to 3 ratio, and Marcus does 2/5 of the work, so deserves 2/5 of the pay, or (2/5)(35) = $14.

Marcus can do \(\frac{2}{15}\) fraction of the house in 1 hour
Latrell - \(\frac{1}{5}\) in 1 hour
So together they can do \(\frac{2}{15}\)+\(\frac{1}{5}\)=\(\frac{1}{3}\) job in 1 hour
To calculate what fraction of job is done by Marcus \(\frac{2}{15}\)/\(\frac{1}{3}\) = \(\frac{2}{5}\)
To be easier to catch the idea, let's calculate Latrel's fraction of job done \(\frac{1}{5}\)/\(\frac{1}{3}\)=\(\frac{3}{5}\)
Working together
Marcus does \(\frac{2}{5}\) part of the job
Latrell does \(\frac{3}{5}\) part of the job
Now let's distribute $35 between Marcus and latrell according to the amount of work done
35*\(\frac{2}{5}\)=$14
