A dealer charges a price that is 15 percent higher than the manufacturer’s price on a computer. During a President’s Day sale the dealer then discounts his price by 10 percent. If the dealer earns a gross profit (final price – manufacturer’s price) of$38.50 on a computer purchased during the sale, what was the manufacturer’s price for the computer?

A. $504.25
B. $770
C. $950
D. $1,100
E. $1,385

We can let the manufacturer’s price = E, so the sale price is 1.15 x 0.9 x E = 1.035E; thus:

1.035E - E = 38.50

0.035E = 38.50

E = 1,100

Answer: D

I have completed the above question in 1:45 minutes using below procedure,call PCG (percentage change graphics)

100 [b]15%up
115 10 % down 103.5.

Considering Manufacturing price as $100, post 15% charges price will be $115 at first and post discount of 10% $103.5

so if $3.5 profit on $100 than what will be the manufacturing price if profit is 38.5,use the unitary method and manufacturing will be $1100.

1,15x - (1,15x*0,1) - x = 38,5
1,15x - 0,115x - x = 38,5
0,035x = 38,5
x = 1100
