City A to City B is a downstream journey on a stream that flows at a speed of 5 miles per hour. Boats P and Q run a shuttle service between the two cities that are 300 miles apart. Boat P, which starts from City A, has a still-water speed of 25 miles per hour, while boat Q, which starts from city B, at the same time, has a still-water speed of 15 miles per hour. When will the two boats meet for the first time?

A. 6 hours
B. 5 hours
C. 8 hours
D. 7.5 hours
E. 12.25 hours

Understood the underline concept. Just one question, how come the still water speed from City A is different from the still water speed from city B.

Given:
City A to City B is a downstream journey on a stream that flows at a speed of 5 miles per hour.
Boats P and Q run a shuttle service between the two cities that are 300 miles apart.
Boat P, which starts from City A, has a still-water speed of 25 miles per hour, while boat Q, which starts from city B, at the same time, has a still-water speed of 15 miles per hour.

Asked: When will the two boats meet for the first time?

Speed of Boat P downstream= 25 + 5 = 30 mph
Speed of Boat Q upstream = 15 - 5 = 10 mph

Relative speed of both boats approaching each other = 30 + 10 = 40 mph
Distance to be travelled = 300 miles
Time taken = 300/40 = 7.5 hours

Hi,

Here, "Still water speed" denotes the speed of boats in still water. The speed of the water stream is 5 mph. I hope this helps.
