In a race of 4800 meters run on a circular track of 400 meters length, the ratio of the speed of the two athletes is 3 : 5. If they run in the opposite directions, how many times do they meet in the entire race?

A. 11
B. 13
C. 15
D. 17
E. 19

A very simple way is :

Let the time taken for each round of 400 m be 5 and 3 respectively for speeds 3:5.

So the time the faster runner takes to finish the race or 12 rounds is \(3*12\)
In 12*3 time units, the slower would run \(\frac{12*3}{5}=7.2\) rounds.

Thus total rounds within themselves are 12+7.2 or 19.2 rounds.
They will meet 19 times in these 19.2 rounds, as every time they meet each other, they have completed one round between themselves

Track length= 400 m
Total length of the race= 4800 m
Total laps= 4800/400 = 12 laps
Ratio of speeds= 3:5
Since they're running in the opp. direction, Number of meeting points = 3+5 = 8 #see end of post
Thus, in every 5 laps, they are going to meet 8 times.
In 5 laps, they meet 8 times,
In 1 lap, they meet 8/5 times,
In 12 laps, they meet ((8/5)*12) times,
= 19.2 times
Thus, they meet 19 times.

#######
If the ratios of speeds of two racers is given in its LOWEST FORM (a:b), then
Number of times two racers meet, when running in the same direction = |a-b|
Number of times two racers meet, when running in the opposite direction = a+b

can you please clarify how did you say in every 5 laps they are ging to meet 8 times. How did you get every five laps?
I understand the ratio shortcut.
Thanks in advance!! Bunuel you also please check this and give solution.
