Mahesh and Umesh purchased a radio each for the same price and both marked-up their respective radios by the same amount. Mahesh gave a discount of Rs 20 followed by another discount of 20% on the reduced price, while Umesh gave a discount of 20% followed by a discount of Rs 20. If Mahesh ‘s profit percentage is equal to thrice of Umesh’s loss percentage, what is the profit (in Rs) of Mahesh on his radio?

Let the CP be CP and marked price be y..
Mahesh gave a discount of Rs 20 followed by another discount of 20% on the reduced price : \((y-20)*0.8 = 0.8y-16 \)
Umesh gave a discount of 20% followed by a discount of Rs 20 : \((y*0.8)-20\)=0.8y-20
So, the difference between the two SPs is 0.8y-16-(0.8y-20)=4, and the CP is between 0.8y-16 and (0.8y-20), as 0.8y-16 gives profit while 0.8y-20 gives a loss.
Let the CP be x below 0.8y-16, so profit of Mahesh = x, while the loss of Umesh = 4-x
In terms of % = \(\frac{x}{CP}*100=3*\frac{4-x}{CP}*100......x=3(4-x)=12-3x....4x=12...x=3\)
Thus Profit of Mahesh = 3
