Given

    • When Caroline travels on business, she is reimbursed $16 more per day for meals than for lodging.
    • If she were given 50% more for lodging and 2/3 as much for meals, the difference would be reversed.

To Find

    • The total daily amount that Caroline is reimbursed for food and lodging.

Approach and Working Out

    • Let say for meals it is $M per day and for lodging $L per day.
      o M – L = 16

    • If she were given 50% more for lodging and 2/3 as much for meals, the difference would be reversed.
      o \(\frac{3L}{2}\) – \(\frac{2M}{3}\) = 16
      o 9L – 4M = 96

    • Solving we get, L = 32, M = 48
      o Answer = 80

Let x be the amount she is reimbursed for lodging and y be the amount she is reimbursed for food.

y-x = 16......Eq1

She is getting 50% more for lodging and 2/3 for food, in doing so, she gets more amount for lodging and the difference is same.

3/2 x - 2/3 y = 16, multiply whole Eq with 6

9x - 4y = 96......Eq2

Multiply Eq1 with 4 and add in Eq2
5x = 160
x=32 & y=48.

Total expense = 80.
