Two trains A and B leave Delhi for Bangalore at 9 am and 9:30 am respectively. Train A travels at a speed of 120 km/hr while Train B travels at a speed of 150 km/hr. At what distance from Delhi will the two trains meet?

A 30 km
B 60 km
C 120 km
D 270 km
E 300 km
Solution:

Let t = the number of hours train A has traveled when train B catches up with it. We can create the the equation:

120t = 150(t - ½)

120t = 150t - 75

30t = 75

t = 2.5

Since A travels for 2.5 hours, it has traveled 120 x 2.5 = 300 km from Delhi when train B catches up with it.

use relative speed:

Train A in half an hour =60 kms

Train B to catvh up ; 2 hours

total distance travelled in 2 hours - 300

Deconstructing the Question

To solve this efficiently, we focus on the Gap created by the head start and the Relative Speed.

Step 1: The Head Start
Train A starts 30 minutes (\(0.5 hours\)) before Train B.
At \(120 km/h\), the distance Train A covers in this time is:
\(Gap = 120 * 0.5 = \) 60 km

Step 2: Relative Speed
Since the trains move in the same direction, the gap closes at the difference of their speeds:
\(Relative Speed = 150 - 120 = \) 30 km/hr

Step 3: Time and Distance
The time required for Train B to close the 60 km gap is:
\(Time = Gap / Relative Speed = 60 / 30 = \) 2 hours

Finally, the distance covered by Train B in 2 hours is:
\(Distance = 150 * 2 = 300 km\)

The correct answer is E.
