Half of the workers in Palabras bookstore have read the latest book by J. Saramago, and 5/8 of the workers have read the latest book by H. Kureishi. The number of workers that have read neither book is one less than the number of the workers that have read the latest Saramago book and have not read the latest Kureishi book. Total workers: 40
Half of the workers in Palabras bookstore have read the latest book by J. Saramago: \(\frac{1}{2} * 40 = 20\)
\(\frac{5}{8}\) of the workers have read the latest book by H. Kureishi: \(\frac{5}{8} * 40 = 25\)
=> 40 - Neither = 20 + 25 - Both
=> Neither - Both = -5 -----(1)
The number of workers that have read neither book is one less than the number of the workers that have read the latest Saramago book and have not read the latest Kureishi book.
=> Neither + 1 = 20 - Both
=> Neither + Both = 19 -----(2)
Adding both, we get 2 Neither = 14 or Neither = 7. Thus, both = 19 - 7 = 12.
