Area of triangle ABC = 1/2*AB*AC

Slope of line L = 3/8

also, 3/8 = 3/x => x = 8

Therefore, AB = 3 units & AC = 8 units

Area = 12 units (E)

Let △ABC be the triangle whose area we have to calculate, Let B denote (0,1) A denote (0,4) and C denote (x,4)

We can give area of △ABC = base x height/2 = (4-1)(x-0)/2=3x/2

Now to calculate x, we can use another triangle that has coordinates (-8/3,0) (0,0) (0,1)

According to the similar triangle
=> (8/3)/1 = (x)/(4-1)
=>8/3=x/3
=>x=8

Therefore ,
area of △ABC =3x/2 = 3*8/2=12 squnits

Hence E

For anyone wondering about geometry on GMAT focus, this question is technically coordinate geometry which GMAT classifies as functions and coordinate plane is tested on the GMAT focus.

If you would like to learn about other geometry questions still present on GMAT focus please see this topic:
