If N is a positive integer and \(N^2\) is a multiple of 150, which of the following is the minimum number of positive factors that N has?
(A) 3
(B) 8
(C) 10
(D) 12
(E) 15

It says "minimum positive factors", not "how many pos actors, so why is it 8?

N^2 being a multiple of 150 implies N^2 = 150k = 2 * 3 * 5^2 * k, for some positive integer k.

For 2 * 3 * 5^2 * k to be a perfect square, k must complete the powers of 2 and 3 to make them even. So the least value of k for which 2 * 3 * 5^2 * k is a perfect square is 2 * 3, making the least value of N^2 equal to 2^2 * 3^2 * 5^2, and the least value of N equal to 2 * 3 * 5 = 30.

Since the minimum number of factors N could have will occur for the least value of N, we check N = 2 * 3 * 5.

That gives (1 + 1)(1 + 1)(1 + 1) = 8 positive factors.

Answer: B.
