In a certain school the student body has one-fifth seniors. If all the students were at a pep rally and forty percent of the seniors left the pep rally early, what was the percent change in the number of students at the rally?

A. 8%
B. 12%
C. 20%
D. 40%
E. 60%

Let’s assume the number of students initially as 100

Given that 1/5 of the total students are seniors = (1/5)*100 = 20

Rest = 100 -20 = 80

Amongst the seniors 40% didn’t attend the rally , so only 60% attend the prep rally.

Seniors = 20, among these 8 = didn’t attend the rally, and 12 = attended the rally.

All the rest students attended the rally = 80

Total ppl attending the rally = 80+12 = 92.

Precent change = (100-92)/100 = 8%

Option A

so here we have to mainly find 40% of 20 % of say x
but since we have to find the % change it does not matter.

For ease of calculation you can take it as 100
then seniors =1/5 of 100=20
40% of 20 then will be 8

So net change in % will be 8/100 * 100=8% (option A)
