How many days after the purchase of Product X does its standard warranty expire?
(1997 is not a leap year.)
(1) When Mark purchased Product X in January 1997, the warranty did not expire
until March 1997.
(2) When Santos purchased Product X in May 1997, the warranty expired in May
1997.

have a doubt in this ..plz correct me

In Statement 1: Maximum validity is from 1st January to 31st March
Minimum validity is from 31st January to 1st March ( WE ARE SURE that 31st march as well as 1st march is not an expiry date HERE)

= (31 + 28 + 31) = 90 days
= (1 + 28 + 1) = 30 days

In Statement 2: (2) When Santos purchased Product X in May 1997, the warranty expired in May 1997.

Maximum possible validity of X is from 1st May to 31st may = 30 days( here we ARE ASSUMING THAT 31st is an expiry date according to the question so we cnnt include 31st day )
Minimum possible validity of X is from 1st May to 2nd May = 1 day


so the inetrsection of (1-30 ) and (30 - 90) is 30 ??

The minimum will occur and the no of days would be : 28+1 = 29 days.

Thus, the range of validity for the warranty : \(29\leq{w}\leq{89}\)

Similarly, from the second statement, we would have \(1\leq{w}\leq{30}\)

Combining both, we have : w=29 or w=30. Insufficient.

i am still little confused ..

y didnt we use the maximum validity upto 1st april because anyways its mentioned that it is not expired in Mach and question asked upto how long it can stand ...( 31st march is not an xpiry date : Should nOt we include that day wen it can be used upto )

like in secnd statemnt we are considering 31st of may ( product x can be usEd on 31st may )

The maximum validity from F.S 1 :

Purchased on 1st January --> The validity starts from 2nd January.
Validity didn't expire until March(The date can not cross over to the month of April) --> 31st March, i.e. the warranty was valid till 31st March.

The total no of days from 2nd Jan to 31st March = 30(Jan)+28(Feb)+31(Mar) = 89 days.

Hence, we ARE including 31st March.

The first statement gives the range "did not expire until March 1997, doesn't that imply that it cant be nay lesser than March, thiugh it can be greater than March?

No. It only means that it can be valid till the last day of March and DOESN'T run into the month of April.

If I say this ticket is valid until tomorrow, will it be valid after that? It won't.

Hello Bunuel,

I have a query on this solution...

I think the most confusing part here is not the calculation but understanding the meaning of 'until'
From your explanation it seems when you say until 1st of March, you are not including 1st of march while counting days....
29 days (the least possible warranty: from 31st of January to 1st of March) = 1 + 28 + 0 = 19
89 days (the greatest possible warranty: from 1st of January to 31st of March) = 31 + 28 + 30 = 89

I tried to find more on meaning of until and it seems there is no clear understanding when until date in mentioned.

We want to know the warranty period in days. From (1) it can be anything from 29 days to 89 days. From (2) it can be anything from 1 day to 30 days. When combining it can be 29 or 30 days.

Now, taking the above into consideration what does your question mean?
