C(j) = 15 +0.20x
C(k) = 20+0.10x

Where C(j) and C(k) are total costs of each company to drive the car down for x miles

1. implies C(k) <25 => 20+0.10X < 25 (subtract 20 from both sides) => 0.10X<5 (now multiply both sides by 10) => X<50.
Substitute the maximum value for X ,i.e, 49 in equation for C(j) you will get a value of $ 24.8 . Since there is no rounding off constraint here, this is sufficient.
2. x<50 . Directly substitute largest possible value for x ,i.e, 49 in equation for C(j) and you will get an answer same as above hence Sufficient.
.
Answer is "D" Each Statement alone is sufficient.

The total charge to rent a car for one day from Company J consists of a fixed charge of $15.00 plus a charge of $0.20 per mile driven. The total charge to rent a car for one day from Company K consists of a fixed charge of $20.00 plus a charge of $0.10 per mile driven. Is the total charge to rent a car from company J for one day and drive it x miles less than $25.00?

(1) The total charge to rent a car from Company K for one day and drive it x miles is less than $25.00
(2) x < 50

Total cost to rent a car from company J (to drive x miles/day)= 15+.20x
Total cost to rent a car from company K (to drive x miles/day)= 20+.10x

Now the question is asking if 15+.20x<25
.20x<10
x<500 (This is what we have to find from the given statements)

Statement 1:-
20+.10x<25
.10x<5
x<500 (Sufficient)

Statement 2:-

x<50 (Sufficient)

Answer should be 'D'

k= 20 + X/10

as per question k< 25
20 + x/10 < 25

x/10<5
x<50 same as option II

If miles driven is less than 50
j= 15+X/5
x can be 1 or 49 in either case X<24.9 or 20.1

Statement (1) is info of Company K. Not sure how that make it sufficient here for Company J? Thanks
