Given: The cost of deluxe hamburger and a shake is $7.00.

Asked: If prices do not vary with quantity purchased, how much does one shake cost?

Let the cost of deluxe hamburger be DH and cost of shake be S
DH + S = 7
S = ?

(1) If the price of the shake were 1/2 of its present price, a shake would cost 1/5 of what the deluxe hamburger costs.
S' = S/2; S' = DH/5; S/2 = DH/5; S = 2DH/5; DH = 2.5S
2.5S + S = 7
S = $7/3.5 = $2
SUFFICIENT

(2) The cost of a deluxe hamburger and 2 shakes is $9.00.
DH + 2S = 9
DH + S = 7
S = 9-7 = $2
SUFFICIENT

OA is D. Either statement alone is sufficient.
For instance:
Statement 1: let cost of a deluxe hamburger be x and a shake be y.
The x+y=7------(1)
According to the statement. If the price of shake would have been half of the present price it would have been 1/5 of the hamburger price that gives
X/5=Y/2,
Also, Y=2X/5---------(2)
Putting value in equation (1)
X+2X/5=7
7X/5=7
7X=35
X=5 and Y = 2 (7-5=Y)
(Sufficient)

Statement 2:
X+Y=7 (Given)
X+2Y=9 (Given)
Using elimination
Y=2
(Sufficient)

So OA is D, as both statement are enough alone.

d+0.4d=7, d=7/1.4=5
s=7-5=2

(2) sufic
d+2s=9

The cost of deluxe hamburger and a shake is $7.00. If prices do not vary with quantity purchased, how much does one shake cost?

H + S = 7, S = ?

(1) If the price of the shake were \(\frac{1}{2}\) of its present price, a shake would cost \(\frac{1}{5}\) of what the deluxe hamburger costs.
\(\frac{S}{2} = \frac{1}{5}*H\)
S = 2, H = 5

SUFFICIENT.

(2) The cost of a deluxe hamburger and 2 shakes is $9.00.
H + 2S = 9
As H + S = 7, we can solve for variables an find S's value.
Solving gives S = 2 and H = 5

SUFFICIENT.

Answer D.

From the question stem, s+h=7 -----(1)
We are to determine s.
We need an expression of s in terms of h or vice versa.

(1) If the price of the shake were 1/2 of its present price, a shake would cost 1/5 of what the deluxe hamburger costs.
Basically statement 1 says: s/2=h/5 hence h=5s/2
substituting h=5s/2 into (1) yields 5s/2+2s/2=7 hence s=2. Statement is sufficient.

(2) The cost of a deluxe hamburger and 2 shakes is $9.00.
h+2s=9 ---(2)
(2)-(1) =>s=2. Statement 2 is also sufficient.

The answer is D.

(1) If the price of the shake were 1/2 of its present price, a shake would cost 1/5 of what the deluxe hamburger costs.

(2) The cost of a deluxe hamburger and 2 shakes is $9.00.

Solution:
Let, the present cost of deluxe hamburger and a shake be d and s
d + s = 7……………..(1)
Required: S = ?
From statement (1), Not Sufficient.

From statement (2),
d + 2s = 9
Or, 7-s + 2s = 9(From equation 1)
Or, s =2, Sufficient.

The cost of deluxe hamburger and a shake is $7.00. If prices do not vary with quantity purchased, how much does one shake cost?

(1) If the price of the shake were half of its present price, a shake would cost one fifth of what the deluxe hamburger costs.

(2) The cost of a deluxe hamburger and 2 shakes is $9.00.

Statement 1: If the price of the shake were half of its present price, a shake would cost one fifth of what the deluxe hamburger costs

Let price of hamburger be H and shake be S

S/2=1/5H Therefore S= 2/5H or H= 5/2 S

S+H= 7 So S+5/2S=7 hence S= 2

Statement 1 sufficient

Statement 2: 2S+H= 9

S+H=7
- 2S+H= 9
Therefore S=2

Statement 2 is sufficient

IMO D both statements are sufficient
