A merchant's markup for an item is the merchant's selling price for the item minus the merchant's total cost for the item. For a certain merchant, is the markup for Item X greater than 45% of the merchant's total cost for Item X?

(1) For this merchant, the markup for Item X is 35% of the selling price for Item X.

(2) For this merchant, the markup for Item X is greater than \(\frac{7}{16}\) of the total cost for Item X.

Given: M = SP - CP

Question: Is M > 45% of CP?

(1) For this merchant, the markup for Item X is 35% of the selling price for Item X.

\(M = \frac{35}{100} * SP\)

\(M = \frac{35}{100} * (CP + M)\)

This will give us the relation between M and CP. We will be able to find that M is exactly what % of CP and that will tell us whether it is less than 45, equal or more. We don't need to actually calculate it at all.
Sufficient alone.

(2) For this merchant, the markup for Item X is greater than 7/16 of the total cost for Item X.

\(M > \frac{7}{16} * CP\)

We know that 1/16 = 6.25% so 7/16 = 7*6.25% = 43.75%.
So we get that M > 43.75% of CP. It may or may not be greater than 45% of CP.
Not sufficient alone.
