Clara graded: 27 tests
So:
  • first 24 tests paid at p dollars each
  • remaining 3 tests paid at p + 8 dollars each
Total earnings: 24p + 3(p + 8) = 27p + 24
Need value of p.

Statement (1)
Earnings beyond first 24 tests:
3(p + 8)
= 3p + 24
This is simply restating the information already given.

Insufficient.

Statement (2)
If Clara graded 35 tests instead of 27, she would grade 8 extra tests.
So extra earnings: 8(p + 8)
= 8p + 64
Again, this is exactly what the statement says.
No new information.
Insufficient.

(1)+(2)
Together still insufficient.

Answer: E

Bunuel
A tutoring center pays Clara each week for grading practice tests. In a given week, she earns p dollars for each of the first 24 tests she grades and p + 8 dollars for each test she grades beyond the first 24. If Clara graded 27 tests last week, what is the value of p?

(1) Clara earned 3p + 24 dollars for the tests she graded beyond the first 24.
(2) If Clara had graded 35 tests last week instead of 27 tests, she would have earned 8p + 64 dollars more.
